Technical Conventions and Media Language

  • Camera: angles, shot types, cinematography
  • Editing: saturation, cuts, special effects, filters, captions/graphics - impacts the pace of what we see on screen
  • Mise-en-scene: costume, props, setting/location, make-up, lighting, 
  • Sound: diagetic, non-diagetic, foley sound, bridge sound
Diagetic sound - any sound within the world of the film that the characters can hear
Non-diagetic sound - any sound that is added in post that we assume the characters cannot hear
Foley sound - Foley is the reproduction of everyday sound effects that are added to films, videos, and other media in post-production to enhance audio quality.

    • Ongoing lack of any real lighting creates a sense of foreboding, mystery and the unknown
    • When Will disappears, the light bulb is the last thing you see, which creates the effect of mystery
    • Lack of light - lack of hope or understanding of what is happening
  • Makeup
    • 80s haircuts to fit with the genre and style of the series
  • Performance
    • scientist acts panicked, afraid and desperate; shaky body language
    • Kids being kids playing dungeons and dragons
Camera
  • Panning shot of the laboratory at the beginning
  • a lot of zoom-tracking shots of the characters - focusing on the characters' emotions and reactions - Will's fear when in the shed and scientist at the beginning
  • Framing
    • doesn't show you the monster - creates mystery and unease
    • shows the monster's POV at the end with a high angle shot - Will's lack of power
Editing
  • Date and place of setting is shown to the audience - context and what to expect
  • Scientist running down hallway and Will running from monster- fast paced cuts that builds panic 
  • Cuts between the following hallway and the scientist's face - horror genre
Sound
  • button pressing and alarms - digitise sounds represent fractiousness
    • furthered through he heartbeat
  • Creature sounds
    • Hoarse gurgle followed by a scream
  • Sprinkler and bike wheel - similar to the monster growl - reminder
  • non-diagetic sounds when monster appears
  • TV static of Mike's TV and Will's phone
  • Reminiscent music of 80s classical music in the background - bittersweet as it is eerie yet nostalgic
