Media Language - The way in which a text is constructed to create meaning for a reader or viewer of the text. All media texts are constructed with a clear intention and audience.

Peaky Blinders Season 5 Trailer Analysis

Mise-en-scene

  • Big Ben - Provides the location of London to be known to the audience. With the show previously being based in Birmingham it creates mystery and curiosity behind the change of location.
  • Bleak, dark and deserted - the setting projects an eerie and tense atmosphere unto the series, with grimy cobblestone streets and vast, dull countrysides.
  • Era - the costume allows the audience to know when and where the series is set, and for previous watchers it reveals the memorable outfits of the main characters.
  • Dull weather - the natural lighting is very dull and monotone, with the clouds and the night casting shadows upon the characters and their whereabouts, furthering the eerie atmosphere.

Sound

  • Pyrotechnics - Timed to be on cue with music. This created emphasis on the significant moments within the trailer, perhaps hinting at the importance and mysterious happenings within the new season. this draws in the audience as it teases them with dramatic, shocking plot twists that will occur.
  • Speech - The trailer contains mini snippets of main character speech, allowing the audience some information on the plot of the upcoming season and what characters may be of focus during it.
  • Modern Music - the song played throughout the trailer is slow paced and contains light piano chords that create an eerie and dark aura. the modern background highlights how, despite being set in the past, the show remains fit for a modern audience and relevant.

Editing / Camera Angles and Shots


  • Fade - to transition between each short clip, the screen fades in and out. This, timed with the music, builds tension within the trailer as if the short clips are all consequently leading or abiding towards an inevitable ending that will be revealed in the new season.this raises interest and curiosity within the audience.
  • Saturation - the trailer contains an overly monotone colour scheme, with the saturation being pretty low, inducing a bleak and dark aura unto the series. It indicates to the new season being melancholy and dark, and this is emphasised by the short, dramatic clips shown throughout.
  • Low Angle Shots - When showing characters through the trailer, low angle shots are usually used. This places power upon the characters as we are looking up at them whilst they are looking down on us. This suggests the impact that each character will have in the new season.
  • Birds Eye View - At the beginning of the trailer there is a birds eye view that pans down onto Tommy. This presents him as an exposed and vulnerable character, perhaps suggesting his mentality during the new season.
Colour / Text 
  • Bleak - the colour scheme is mainly monotone and bleak throughout the trailer, suggesting the darkness and mystery that surrounds the upcoming season.
  • BBC One - The logo for BBC Once is constantly presented at the bottom of the screen during the trailer. this allows the corporation to provide the audience of the knowledge of where to find the series.
  • Peaky Blinders - The logo for Peaky Blinders is very iconic in its ability to be both modern and old simultaneously, hinting at the relevancy of the series in a modern period/ audience.
